This makes it difficult to keep a global view of the system and to guarantee real coherence as it evolves. Left unmanaged, the tangle of flows between applications, mismatched data dictionaries and ad-hoc infrastructure choices makes the whole unreadable — and creates strong inertia whenever change is needed.
Enterprise architecture answers exactly this challenge. It is the practice of analyzing, defining and framing how an information system evolves in line with corporate strategy, business processes and technological innovation. A useful starting principle: distinguish clearly between the information system (a functional, durable view of how the business works) and the IT system (its technical implementation). The purpose of enterprise architecture is to provide a consolidated view of the whole and a coherent plan that keeps infrastructure, applications, functional modeling and business needs aligned — without ignoring what already exists.
